AB OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the
ultrastructure of oral hairy leukoplakia (HL) in HIV-positive
hemophiliacs in Japan. METHODS: Biopsy specimens for the ultrathin
sectioning were taken from HL developed in the lateral border of the
tongue of two HIV-positive hemophiliacs. RESULTS: Disappearance of
nuclear membrane and punched-out appearance of the condensed chromatin
of koilocytotic cells were observed in the keratinocytes. Epstein-Barr
virus (EBV) particles were present in the nuclei and the extracellular
spaces in the upper two thirds of the epithelium. In the nucleoplasm EBV
capsids in different stages of assembly were densely packed. DISCUSSION
AND CONCLUSIONS: EBV has been identified in HL lesions in HIV-positive
patients in several studies. In the present study EBV particles were
observed in HL lesions developed in the lateral tongue of two
HIV-positive hemophiliacs in Japan.
